Pass/fail FAQs

Students may choose to take one course per term on a pass/fail basis, with a maximum of 12 credit hours with a Pass grade counting toward their degree requirements.

To take a course as pass/fail, students must declare their intent by the deadline in the academic calendar (coinciding with the term’s drop/withdrawal deadline) by submitting the Undergraduate Pass/Fail Option Declaration Form.

Students should consult their academic adviser before opting for pass/fail, as some courses may be ineligible for this grading option.

Understanding pass/fail credits

Pass grades (P) are A, B and C (including C-); failing grades (F) are D+, D, D and F.

Pass/fail and student eligibility

A grade of “P” does not affect your GPA, but it counts toward your total credit hours earned. However, a grade of “F” does impact your GPA. If you’re at risk of losing financial aid due to GPA requirements, a pass/fail course could lower your GPA further if you receive an “F.”

It‘s recommended to consult with your financial aid counselor to discuss any potential impact on your aid.
