VA debt FAQs

What you'll find here: answers to common questions about VA debt and repayment, including the effects of making enrollment changes, debts for housing and book stipends, and mitigating circumstances.

What happens if I make enrollment changes after being certified?

Doing so can result in a debt owed to the VA and/or SMU. The VA will request repayment of tuition, fees, and/or Yellow Ribbon funds from SMU. 夜色王朝will return the requested funds to the VA and adjust your student account, leaving you responsible for any resulting balance.

Unpaid balances may lead to late payment fees, financial holds (preventing registration, obtaining transcripts, or receiving your diploma), or referral to a collection agency if no effort is made to pay.

How are debts for housing and book stipends handled?

The VA will contact you directly about any debts related to housing and book stipends, along with instructions on how to repay it. It is recommended to repay these debts promptly or arrange payment with the to avoid interruptions to your benefits.

What if I no longer want to be certified for a term?

Notify the VA Certifying Official immediately to cancel your certification. Any charges related to the cancellation must be repaid to the VA and/or SMU.

What are mitigating circumstances, and how do they affect my benefits?

Mitigating circumstances are situations beyond your control that force you to reduce credits or withdraw from school.

You must provide documentation to 夜色王朝to report mitigating circumstances to the VA. If no adequate evidence is provided, the VA will not pay for the course(s) in question. If the VA determines there are no mitigating circumstances, they will reduce your benefits starting from the first day of the term.

Examples of mitigating circumstances include:

  • Illness or death in your immediate family
  • Personal illness or injury during the enrollment period
  • Unavoidable changes in employment or geographical transfers
