Course code guide

Understand how courses are labeled so you can effectively search for classes through my.夜色王朝or the course catalog.

Class number

A 4-digit number unique to each class section for a specific term.

Subject code

A 2–4 letter abbreviation for the department or subject area, like:

  • BIOL = Biology
  • ECO = Economics
  • LT = Literary Studies

Catalog number (4 digits)

Describes the level, course identity, or credit hours.

  • 1 = First Year
  • 2 = Sophomore
  • 3 = Junior
  • 4 = Senior
  • 5 = Advanced Senior
  • 6–9 = Graduate level

  • 0 = 0.0 credit or nonstandard credit

 3rd & 4th digits = Specific course identifier within the department 

Section code (3鈥4 characters)

Indicates when, where, and how the course is offered.

  • 0 = Daytime class (before 5 p.m.), Cox graduate morning section
  • 1 = Cox graduate afternoon section
  • 4 = Lyle Distance (400)/Online (401+)
  • 5 = Study Abroad
  • 6 = Washington, D.C. or Theology Houston
  • 7 = Evening class (5 p.m. or later), Cox graduate evening section
  • 8 = Lecture with a required "N" lab
  • L = Laboratory
  • N = Noncredit Lab (paired with an "8" lecture)
  • P = Private studies (e.g., theses, directed study, projects)
  • R = Noncredit Recitation (often used in Air Force (AERO) sections taught at UNT)

  • For codes starting with 0, 7, 8, L, N, or R: the next two digits are just sequential (e.g., 01, 02, 03)
  • P sections = Tied to instructor
  • 4, 5, 6 = Tied to specific location or program

Special cases

2nd digit = Module

  • 0 = Full Term
  • 1 = Module A
  • 2 = Module B

2nd digit = 9

  • 091 = Summer/May/January session
  • 092 = August session

4th character

  • A or B = Alternate time/calendar or location
  • C = Combined section
  • H = Honors section

4th character = session

  • 1 = First 5-week session
  • 2 = Second 5-week session
  • 3 = Full 10-week session
  • 4 = Bridge session (starts before first session and ends after second)

Availability & enrollment info

  • UNRSTR SEATS: Number of unrestricted seats available
  • RSTR SEATS: Seats available with enrollment restrictions
  • REQUISITES: Required pre/co-requisites enforced by the system
  • CONSENT: Department or instructor approval needed to enroll
