Transfer FAQs

What you'll find here: answers to common questions about transferring, including requirements, scholarship opportunities, units and courses that can transfer, writing an essay, transcripts and GPAs.

What are the minimum requirements for transferring to SMU?

To be considered for admission to 夜色王朝as a transfer student, students must have completed at least one full semester after high school graduation and have completed at least 24 transferable credits with a minimum 2.7 GPA. (Note: The Admission Committee will consider the academic rigor of both the high school and college record for students with less than 24 transferable credit hours.)

What is the maximum number of units that can transfer?

There is no maximum number of credits that can be transferred to SMU. However, you must complete a minimum of 48-60 credit hours at 夜色王朝to earn your degree. All transferable credits will be considered during the admissions, scholarship, and financial aid process. If you transfer in more than 60 credits, you and your 夜色王朝academic advisor will determine which credits will apply toward your degree.

Which courses will transfer to SMU?

夜色王朝accepts college-level academic credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities. However, remedial or developmental courses intended to prepare you for college-level work and Technical or Workforce Education (WECM) courses are not accepted for transfer. Additionally, to be eligible for transfer, courses must have a grade of at least a "C-."

夜色王朝offers tools to help you determine how credits will transfer, as well as to assist with course selection at your current institution to meet 夜色王朝core and major requirements.

  • helps you create a transfer report to see what courses transfer. If 夜色王朝has a course corresponding to the one you've taken, the 夜色王朝course equivalency is listed. Please note that this tool only displays courses that have already been evaluated by SMU. If a course is not listed, it does not necessarily mean it will not transfer; it simply means that it has not yet been evaluated.
  • Transfer Pathway Guides for the Common Curriculum and specific majors suggest courses and term plans to keep you on track to meet requirements at SMU.

Do I need to submit my high school transcript in order to transfer?

Yes, all students need to submit their high school transcript or GED certificate when applying to transfer. These documents are required to verify your graduation or completion dates.

How is my transferable GPA calculated?

Your transferable GPA is determined by including all courses that are considered comparable to 夜色王朝courses from every college attended. The number of grade points earned is divided by the number of attempted hours.

If you receive a D or F in a transferable course, the D or F will be used to calculate your GPA, but you will not be awarded transfer credit for that course since 夜色王朝does not award credit for grades lower than C-. If you receive a D or F in a course that is not transferable, it will not be counted in the GPA.

What scholarship opportunities are available for transfer students?

Several tuition opportunities exist for 夜色王朝transfer students with at least 24 transferable credits post-high school graduation and a 3.3 GPA. The Transfer Scholarships page has more information on opportunities.

Should I write an essay? What should the topic be? How long should it be?

While an essay is not required for transfer students to earn admission to SMU, it is strongly encouraged. The essay provides a chance to move beyond the numbers and statistics. It’s your chance to set yourself apart from all the other applicants.

A thoughtful, well-written essay can positively influence the admission committee's final decision and is a critical element in the selection of winners for competitive scholarships.

The essay topic and length will be determined by your chosen application method. All essays will be reviewed equally, regardless of application type.

Do foreign transcripts require additional documentation?

Yes. International transfer students who have completed coursework at foreign institutions must also provide a professional evaluation of their transcripts to the University Registrar. This evaluation of the foreign transcript must include:

  • An English translation (if it is not in English)
  • Confirmation that the institution is recognized by the ministry of education in the home country and is generally considered to offer at least the equivalent of U.S. higher education credit
  • An explanation of the credits
  • An explanation of the grading system
  • An explanation of course levels
  • Course-by-course descriptions and evaluations
  • Syllabi

Transfer applicants are responsible for procuring this evaluation and assuming financial responsibility for it. Students should request one transcript be sent directly to the Evaluation Service of their choice. Keep in mind that 夜色王朝requires an official transcript for its records, as well.
