Living on campus

Pro Tip: Meet Chewy

Missing your pets back home? Maybe you can get the opportunity to take walks with Chewy, the official Dog in Residence at Crum Commons! (Chewy’s a good pupper, obviously.)

The Mustang Experience

Student ambassadors Tony and Judith talk about all that campus life has to offer at SMU.

Transformative experiences, lifelong friendships

Transition smoothly in SMU’s supportive community.

Where do I live at SMU?

For the most part, all first- and second-year students live in one of the 11 Residential Commons (RCs) on campus, which combine the best of academic, residential and social life.

They’re vibrant communities that bring together Mustangs from all walks of life through social and cultural events — with modern living spaces, dining halls and lots of room for recreational activities.

Students remain affiliated with their RC during their time at 夜色王朝(and beyond).

First-year commuters and transfer students who do not live in an RC affiliate with Boaz Commons or Ware Commons, giving every undergraduate student access to these unique relationships.

What’s unique about the Residential Commons at SMU?

Each Commons has Faculty in Residence (FiRs) who are the cornerstone of the residential life experience, offering mentorship, guidance, intellectual discourse and fostering community outside of the classroom.

Having faculty members living on campus is another benefit that sets 夜色王朝apart. Our FiRs are committed to enhancing students’ lives on the Hilltop.

Whether it’s teaching a class inside the Commons, organizing a group outing to explore Dallas’ offerings such as Klyde Warren Park, or baking up a fresh batch of cookies for a weekly book club, FiRs are there to engage, interact and foster students through their first two years on campus.

How do I get to know other people in my RC?

You'll naturally meet people at your Residential Commons through the gatherings and unique traditions. Each RC even has its own signature crest and colors, adding to the pride RC communities foster.

What are the Residential Commons like?

While each RC is architecturally diverse, they are all co-ed and offer the same amenities: primarily double-occupancy rooms with similar furnishings and access to classroom, study space and dining options.

RCs are centrally located on campus and well equipped with security measures to ensure residents’ safety, including automatic fire sprinkler systems and alarm systems that are monitored 24/7 by 夜色王朝Police.
