What is a Federal Pell Grant?

A Federal Pell Grant is a form of financial aid provided by the US government to help low-income undergraduate students pay for college. Unlike loans, Pell Grants are not expected to be repaid. It is also available to certain post-baccalaureate students who are working to earn a teaching certificate.

What is the maximum amount I can receive?

For the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years, eligible students can receive up to $7,395. Students may only receive one Pell Grant per award year and cannot receive Pell Grant funds from multiple schools simultaneously.

Additionally, the amount varies based on how many credit hours a student is enrolled in. At 12 credit hours or more, a student is eligible for 100% of their eligible Pell Grant amount, but if a student is enrolled in 6 credit hours, for example, then they are eligible for only 50% of their Pell Grant amount.

How do I know if I am eligible?

To qualify, you must:

• Demonstrate exceptional financial need
• Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification approved by the US Department of Education
• Be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen
• Have a valid Social Security Number
• Maintain satisfactory academic progress
• Register with Selective Service (if required)

Is there a limit on how long I can receive Pell Grants?

Yes. Students are limited to 12 semesters (or 600%) of the full-time Pell Grant amount or the equivalent if attending part-time. You can review your federal financial aid history at any time by logging in at and reviewing the section titled, “My Aid”

Does transferring schools affect my Pell Grant?

If you transfer schools during an award year, any Pell Grant funds received at your previous institution will be considered when determining your remaining eligibility at your new school.
